Dax McCarty and FC Dallas teammates Jeff Cunningham and Heath Pearce are in Denmark with the U.S. Men's National Team for the squad's final 2009 fixture. McCarty earned his first national team cap Saturday, Nov. 14 against Slovakia before traveling with the USMNT to Denmark for their Nov. 18 friendly. While preparing for Wednesday's contest, McCarty took a few minutes to chat with Bobby Rhine about the 2009 MLS season and his U.S. Soccer experience.

BR: You had a solid 2009 season, what were a few of the highlights?

DM: The 2009 season was definitely a bittersweet year for me. On one hand, I thought I had a pretty good season for FC Dallas, which is always rewarding, and I am happy about that. On the other hand, we didn't make the playoffs as a team, and that is always the ultimate goal for a player so that was very disappointing. In terms of highlights during the season, I would have to say (in no particular order): winning the Brimstone Cup (again), watching Jeff Cunningham win the Golden Boot (very deserved), and going on a 4-game winning streak at the end of the year to give us a chance at making the playoffs.

BR: Does the game feel differently to you when playing at the International level versus the club level?

DM: First, just let me say that playing with FC Dallas and the players on our team has gotten me this chance with the National Team. I think that speaks volumes to the level of play we have within our team and also to the quality players that we play against day in, day out. With that being said, the International level is definitely a step above the club level. The speed of play, how quickly you make decisions and competition within the team are all aspects that can't be replicated anywhere else.

BR: How did your season with FC Dallas help prepare you for this opportunity with the U.S. National Team?

DM: I think just playing week in and week out in MLS has helped me immensely in getting this chance. I was lucky enough to play almost every game this season for FC Dallas, and that helps you find a level of fitness and consistency that is crucial in being able to play your best. Staying healthy was also a very important factor for me, and luckily enough, I was able to stay relatively healthy for the entire season.

BR: You just signed a contract extension with FCD, what does your time with the U.S. National Team do for you in anticipation of the 2010 Major League Soccer season?

DM: Let me just start by saying I am very happy and thankful that I was able to re-sign for FC Dallas. To the Hunts, the front office staff, the coaching staff, my teammates, and especially the fans I just want to say that I am very excited about the prospects for FC Dallas in the coming seasons, and I want to be part of that. My time with the National Team definitely gives me confidence heading into next season.

I know I can improve in certain areas, and I plan on doing that to have an even better year for the team. And, of course, making the playoffs is a must!

BR: You're not new to national team setups, but this is your first camp with the full team, have you had pranks played on you?

DM: Thankfully, the answer to that question is no. All the guys have been very cool and welcoming to me. I know most of them from the youth teams and playing in MLS, so there wasn't much of an introduction needed. I'm sure that they will have something planned for me if I am lucky enough to be back in the future!

BR: Speaking of the future... dreams of South Africa?

DM: I absolutely have dreams of making the World Cup team. I know that I am a longshot to make the team, but I think that I have to keep believing I can do it. I am a very competitive person so until they name the 23 guys that will be making the trip, I will keep fighting until the very end.

BR: Last question... Slovakian or Danish fare?

DM: Great question. Both places have been very good in terms of the meals we have been provided. I have to give the slight edge to Denmark though mainly because of the variety we have for every meal. I am also partial to the salmon we have been served in Denmark, it's fantastic!
